Another Sculpture for the Exchange

Here is a new sculpture that I just finished for the exchange and now I'm finishing up my third one for the assignment.  I'll post the image of that sculpture as soon as I complete it.  I'm also taking a print class this semester, so I can learn to screen-print on clay using underglazes.  I'll also be learning how to make my own decals, with the intention to incorporate the techniques into a couple of my sculptures this semester. I really like the form of this sculpture and will create molds for this, so I can slip-cast the parts and then assemble them.  I'll use the same cone 6 to cone 10 slip-cast formula I used previously to recreate multiples of this form in order to create a larger sculpture this semester.

Pictures of Work in Progress Spring 2011

Well I know I said I would have some new pictures a couple of days ago, but unfortunately I have lost my camera!  So now that I have taken some pics, I thought I would post them as soon as possible.  The first picture is of a new piece and the second picture is a part of another piece in progress.  I'll have to post a future picture of exactly how this second picture of the part works with the overall piece.  These pieces that I am working on are for the "exchange".  We will be trading the different works with the other grad students in ceramics on Tuesday, so I'll take some pictures of the works I receive that I'll have to finish the surfaces on, and post those next week.  Depending on the type of work and clay body used will help me determine what type of glazes I'll have to make next week, as well as test before committing to specific glazes.

Start of Spring Semester 2011

So I know on my last blog that I said I would have pictures of the work I've started and now here they are. I actually finished the assembling of the parts on the table, but I guess I'll have to post those pictures tomorrow, since I forgot to take a picture before I left the studio this evening.  The images are representing the sculptures that I am currently working on.  Graduate school isn't all about making art, but also about understanding the reasons an artist makes his work and why.  With that being said I must get back to my research and readings to help me understand contemporary views within art, particularly that of conceptual art which we are discussing in my Graduate Seminar class this semester.  Hope everyone has a great week!

Start of a new Semester 2011

Well it's been awhile since the last blog I've posted and the new semester is under way at Edinboro.  I'm currently hand building some sculptures for an exchange that the graduate students are partaking in and I'm really excited about it.  The work we make will be exchanged at the greenware stage and the surface of our forms will be done by the other graduate students.  Hopefully this will lead to new ways on thinking about our surfaces and how other artists might interpret them using their own glazes and techniques.  At the end of this project, we will show the work in a gallery setting.  I don't have any pictures yet to post of this progress, but I'll will try to have some posted by tomorrow.

"In Transit", Nov. 29-Dec.3, 2010, Northern Illinois University

The show titled "In Transit", was held at The Northern Illinois University Annex Art Gallery, Dekalb, Illinois.  The show is a collaboration between Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois.  Graduate students from Edinboro had the opportunity showing art work at the gallery in Illinois.  The work of the graduate students from Northern Illinois University will be shown at The Bates Gallery after the Christmas break.  The piece pictured is the piece that I entered for the show in Illinois.  This piece was created my first year of graduate school, last year, and is titled "Found Love".

Images of my new work at the show, "Intermediate Perception"

"Precious", Terra Cotta, 2010

"Untitled", Earthenware, 2010

"Spare Parts", Earthenware/Wood, 2010

"Excess", Slip-Cast Porcelain/Wood/Straw/UPC Bar Codes, 2010

"Linked", Earthenware, 2010

The final push to get all the work done in time was definitely worth it.  Here are some images of the final pieces that I have been working on this semester.  It's really fun to look back and see what the pieces looked like from the beginning to the end result from my past posts.  Hope you enjoy the new work.
